At Covenant Church we support local and international ministries and missionaries who share the Gospel.
The Church of the Cross (also known as C+) is an Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC) plant, a brand new church which started a new worship community and spreads the Christian faith in Birmingham, Alabama.
Ministry Description
The church of the Cross began with a church planter, Zac Hicks, along with Doug Webster and Jess Leslie, in the summer of 2022. In the fall, a Core Team of approximately 20 people met in the Hicks home twice a month to begin praying, studying Scripture, and discerning their vision and mission together in preparation for launch in the new year. In addition to preparing the Core Team for launch, the leaders of Church of the Cross spent the fall developing relationships and raising support from sister churches in Birmingham and the greater Southeast.
Church of the Cross is a Christian church in the tradition of the Protestant Reformation which believes the Scriptures to be the infallible Word of God and our final authority in faith and practice, and we find the historic creeds of the early church (the Apostles’ Creed and Nicene Creed) to be vital expressions of the most important tenets of the global church universal. Church of the Cross is a member of the same Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC) denomination as Covenant Church.
On January 8, 2023, Church of the Cross began weekly worship services in the fellowship hall of Cahaba Heights United Methodist Church. With a regular attendance of about 150, we have moved to a 4 pm worship service in the sanctuary. Worship is Christ-centered, liturgical, and musically contemporary.
Fruit/Impact
The Lord has blessed the church numerous ways: the initial core group has remained strong; we are generationally diverse with singles, families, and young people; two interns work with youth; we have a part-time nursery director; Zac is mentoring a prospective EPC church planter, Dan Edwards, who attends Church of the Cross and hopes to plant an African-American congregation in Birmingham; our worship teams are led and mentored by Jess; we have a number of opportunities through the week for prayer and Bible study; our preaching rotation is well received; and a number of “dechurched” people have found a real home in this household of faith. From week to week the gospel is being preached and lived, and we sense the Lord’s blessing.
We are grateful for Covenant San Diego’s financial support, denominational fellowship, and shared mission. Thank you!
